Complex Berry phase and imperfect non-Hermitian phase transitions
نویسندگان
چکیده
In many classical and quantum systems described by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, spectral phase transitions, from entirely real-energy spectrum to a complex spectrum, can be observed as parameter in the system is increased above critical value. A paradigmatic example provided possessing parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, where energy remains real unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ while transition energies broken phase. Such transitions are universally sharp. However, when slowly periodically cycled, become smooth, i.e., imperfect, owing Berry associated cyclic adiabatic evolution of system. This remarkable phenomenon illustrated considering Wannier-Stark ladders $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric class two-band lattices subjected external dc field, revealing that nonvanishing imaginary part Zak phase---the picked up Bloch eigenstate evolving across entire Brillouin zone---is responsible for imperfect transitions.

متن کاملNon-equilibrium phase transitions
These lecture notes give a basic introduction to the physics of phase transitions under non-equilibrium conditions. The notes start with a general introduction to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics followed by four parts. The first one discusses the universality class of directed percolation, which plays a similar role as the Ising model in equilibrium statistical physics. The second one giv...
متن کاملBerry Phase and Supersymmetry
We study the constraints of supersymmetry on the non-Abelian holonomy given by U = P exp(i ∫ A), the path-ordered exponential of a connection A. For theories with four supercharges, we show that A satisfies the tt* equations if it is a function of chiral multiplets. In contrast, when A is a function of vector multiplets, it satisfies the Bogomolnyi monopole equations. We describe applications o...
متن کاملComplex contagions and hybrid phase transitions
A complex contagion is an infectious process in which individuals may require multiple transmissions before changing state. These are used to model behaviours if an individual only adopts a particular behaviour after perceiving a consensus among others. We may think of individuals as beginning inactive and becoming active once they are contacted by a sufficient number of active partners. These ...

COMPUTING IN SCIENCE & ENGINEERING terials, surfactants, and so on. While we can perform atomistically realistic simulations in special cases (molten polyethylene at high temperatures4 or polyethylene crystals in the orthorhombic phase5), these calculations are cumbersome due to potential complexity, and phase transition studies are out of reach. This is even more true for polymer blends, where...
